Drawings showing the action

The wagons coupled. As they are in tension they will remain this way.

As the wagons are moved together, the hook drops. Provided the loco is reversed, the wagons are uncoupled.

As the wagons continue to be moved together, the loop strikes the dropper on the other wagon.

As the wagons are moved together, the hook drops. Provided the loco is reversed, the wagons are uncoupled.

Continued pressure on the dropper pushes the dropper. This action lifts the hook and the magnet moves towards the pin until it is held there.

As the wagons are pulled apart, the hook is captured within the loop and therefore the wagons are coupled. This action also releases the magnet from the pin so the hook is free to fall if it were not held by the loop.

It has to be seen to be believed, have a look at the movie which shows the action in 4mm.
